Being the Change: Insights from the Global Citizen NOW Summit
I recently had the privilege of attending the Global Citizen NOW Summit held at the Glasshouse in New York City. The atmosphere was electric, with celebrities including John Legend, Gary Vaynerchuk, Gayle King, Letitia James, Tamron Hall, Emmanuel Macron, Joe Scarborough, Busy Phillips, Juju Chang, and many others appearing on stage. But beyond the glitz and glamour, the message behind the event was palpable.
The Summit was a call to action, a rallying cry for all of us to come together and make a difference in the world. We discussed pressing issues such as hunger relief, the climate crisis, and women's reproductive rights. I felt both inspired and angry - angry at the injustices that still exist in our world, angry at the lack of action being taken to address them.
Now, I know what you might be thinking - anger is often seen as a negative emotion. But the truth is, anger can be a powerful force for change. It creates a space for conversation, for dialogue, for action. And that's exactly what we need right now - tangible action that helps real people.
One of the most inspiring moments of the Summit for me was listening to a Kenyan activist named Wangari Kuria, Founder and CEO of Farmer on Fire. She spoke about how her whole community comes together once a week to clean their own streets, from top to bottom. It's a mandatory act, but over time it has created a sense of pride and camaraderie. What a beautiful movement to be a part of!
The Summit humbled me and reminded me that sometimes, instead of complaining about the world not living up to my standards, I need to take a step back and reflect on how I can be a better friend, neighbor, and human champion. The true treasures in life are the ones that glisten no matter what time of day, because they stem from the heart which forever beats.
My wish is that we continue to come together, to make a difference, and to be the change we wish to see in the world.
